The university has a three-part mission of teaching, research, and service. At ibiblio we are a public service in that our collections are public, a teaching space in that we provide learning opportunities for students pursuing a range of degrees and specialties, and a repository for a range of corpora that have been used by scholars both here at UNC-CH and around the world.<\/blockquote>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student hiring and supervision.<\/li>\n<li>Learning objective development and oversight for students in the Field Experience program.<\/li>\n<li>University, Contributor, and other stakeholder relationship management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2011&#8211;present: <strong>Systems Administrator<\/strong> with <a title=\"University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unc.edu\">UNC Chapel Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Implement and subsequently replace virtualization and automation solutions three times so far.<\/li>\n<li>Consolidated and standardized Linux build practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>September 2008&#8211;2010: systems administration and on-call support for The <a title=\"Fire Dog Lake blogs\" href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\">Fire Dog Lake Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Built services.firedoglake.com, integrating trac, cacti and nagios with an LDAP backend.<\/li>\n<li>Lead and coordinate kernel, apache, and other critical updates for a family of 13 blogs with over 3 million visits per month.<\/li>\n<li>Implemented ModSecurity 2.x<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>October 2008&#8211;2010: Student Assistant with <a title=\"Documenting the American South\" href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/\">DocSouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Updated and repaired outdated management scripts.<\/li>\n<li>Developed <a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/simile-widgets\/\">simile<\/a>-based timeline for <a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/gtts\/learn\/timeline.html\">Going to the Show<\/a> (Django template and JavaScript).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>December 2006&#8211;2010: Student Systems Administrator with <a title=\"The public's library and digital archive\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\">ibiblio.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teach and support fellow student staff who maintain internal infrastructure and support contributor sites.<\/li>\n<li>Updates and re-architecture from RHEL 4.<\/li>\n<li>Manage <a title=\"mailman mailing list software\" href=\"http:\/\/list.org\">mailman<\/a> instance with 559 lists, over 200 active lists.<\/li>\n<li>Co-managed migration from MySQL 4.0.27 to 5.0.51 on a primary database host supporting apache virtual hosts and multiple migrations since.<\/li>\n<li>Implemented <a title=\"tuning is the tricky part\" href=\"http:\/\/spamassassin.apache.org\/\">SpamAssassin<\/a> <abbr title=\"Unsolicited Bulk Email\">UBE<\/abbr> filtering for mailing lists.<\/li>\n<li>Spearheaded transition to <a title=\"previously we accepted new tickets via email... lots of spam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/help\">new interface<\/a> for contributor-facing issue tracker, and later replaced the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.ibiblio.org\">public help site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Modernized virtual host and user creation scripts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>May 2007&#8211;2013: Triangle Linux Users Group (<a title=\"Triangle Linux Users Group\" href=\"http:\/\/trilug.org\">TriLUG<\/a>) vice-chair.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advocated for and lead implementation of the first anti-harassment policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spring 2006&#8211;2010: Co-president of the Carolina Open Source Initiative (COSI), a student group advocating for increased use of Open Source Software on campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2013&#8211;present: Technical Director at ibiblio.org ibiblio is both a digital library (a collection of volunteer-led, contributor-managed collections) and a lab at UNC-CH where both undergraduate and graduate students develop skills in UI\/UX, database systems, digital archiving, linux systems administration, infosec, and contributor relations.
